And whatever any bit wants,
wants the wanter.

When my pain causes my healing,

my lows transforms to highs and heresy

became faith.

My soul, heart, and body were blocking my journey before.

My body became heart, my heart became soul,

and the soul turned to be

the creator.

Music Master

You that love lovers,
this is your home. Welcome!

In the midst of making form, love
made this form that melts form,
with love for the door,
soul the vestibule.

Watch the dust grains moving
in the light near the window.
Their dance is our dance.

We rarely hear the inward music,
but we’re all dancing to it nevertheless,

directed by the one who teaches us,
the pure joy of the sun,
our music master.

If you can disentangle
yourself from your selfish self
all heavenly spirits
will stand ready to serve you

If you can finally hunt down
your own beastly self
you have the right
to claim Solomon’s kingdom

You are that blessed soul who
belongs to the garden of paradise
is it fair to let yourself
fall apart in a shattered house

You are the bird of happiness
in the magic of existence
what a pity when you let
yourself be chained and caged

But if you can break free
from this dark prison named body
soon you will see
you are the sage and the fountain of life.

After such a long time
Here We meet again
You see the smile on my face
In your eyes I try to find my place
Still you avoid to look at me
Still I die to see you smiling
We have a lot to talk but
Only little left to speak
You asked why I stop trying
and I said nothing n smiled
Then you left saying its getting too late
I sat there same place where we met first time
Waiting once again for You to come back…

The Absolute Being works in nonexistence –
what but nonexistence is the workshop of the Maker
of existence?

Does anyone write upon a written page? Does
anyone plant a sapling in a place already planted?

No, he searches for a paper free of writing, he
sows a seed in a place unsown.

Be, oh brother, a place unsown, a white paper
untouched by the pen.

Come into the shade of the tree that allays has fresh flowers.

Stay in the shop of the sugar-seller.

Shams has come!
My Sun and Moon, my sight and hearing
that Beauty suddenly appeared by my side.
The one who was always in my thoughts
for whom I’ve searched so long
has come to me with open arms
laying flowers on my path.
My deepest wish has been granted.
What can I fear when my shield
my water of life has come?
Today is a day of Glory!
Today I am like Solomon
with the ring of abundance on my finger
and the divine crown on my head.
I can fly for he has given me wings
I can roar like a lion, I can rise like dawn.
No more verses
for I am taken to a place from where
this world seems so small.

The Breaking Wave of Love

Ah, once more he put a fire in me,
And once more this crazy heart
is craving the open plains.
This ocean of love breaks into another wave
And blood pours from my heart
in all directions.

Ah, one spark flew
and burned the house of my heart.
Smoke filled the sky.
The flames grew fierce in the wind.

The fire of the heart is not easily lit.
So don’t cry out: “O Lord, rescue me
from the burning flames!
Spare me from the army of thoughts
that is marching through my mind!”

O Heart of Pure Consciousness,
You are the ruler of all hearts.
After countless ages
you brought my soul
all it ever wished for.

The eyes of all people happy and sad,
are closed to the truth.
May their eyes be opened!
May they look upon God
and get drunk on His beauty.

May their hands reach toward the Truth
May their ears hear the voice of the Beloved.
May the shadow of a Master
fall upon everyone who has devotion.

All the world praises you,
But where did this “you” come from?
All the universe is born of Love –
But where did this Love come from?

O Shams,
you are the owner of the land of life –
the light of every heart;
Even the King of Love
knows no love
that is not yours.

My heart, sit only with those
who know and understand you.
Sit only under a tree
that is full of blossoms.
In the bazaar of herbs and potions
don’t wander aimlessly
find the shop with a potion that is sweet
If you don’t have a measure
people will rob you in no time.
You will take counterfeit coins
thinking they are real.
Don’t fill your bowl with food from
every boiling pot you see.
Not every joke is humorous, so don’t search
for meaning where there isn’t one.
Not every eye can see,
not every sea is full of pearls.
My heart, sing the song of longing
like nightingale.
The sound of your voice casts a spell
on every stone, on every thorn.
First, lay down your head
then one by one
let go of all distractions.
Embrace the light and let it guide you
beyond the winds of desire.
There you will find a spring and
nourished by its sweet waters
like a tree you will bear fruit forever.

You are drunk
and I’m intoxicated
no one is around
showing us the way home

Again and again
I told you
drink less
a cup or two

I know in this city
no one is sober
one is worse than the other
one is frenzied and
the other gone mad

Come on my friend
step into the tavern of ruins
taste the sweetness of life
in the company of another friend

Here you’ll see
at every corner
someone intoxicated
and the cup-bearer
makes her rounds

I went out of my house
a drunkard came to me
someone whose glance
uncovered a hundred
houses in paradise

Rocking and rolling
he was a sail
with no anchor but
he was the envy of all those sober ones
remaining on the shore

where are you from i asked
he smiled in mockery and said
one half from the east
one half from the west
one half made of water and earth
one half made of heart and soul
one half staying at the shores and
one half nesting in a pearl

I begged
take me as your friend
I am your next of kin
he said I recognize no kin
among strangers
I left my belongings and
entered this tavern
I only have a chest
full of words
but can’t utter
a single one

I am in your garden
beneath a tree that grants every wish.
I am so full of fire
that I dance without music.

I am a shadow
forever dancing with the sunlight
At times I lie on the ground,
At times I stand on my head.
At times I am short,
At times I am long.

Like the movement of dark and light
across the earth,
I move across the ages.
I am the Ruler of the Egyptians
and the Guide of the Jews.
Among men of letters
I am the law of truth –
At times I am like a pen,
At times like the staff of Moses,
At times like a cobra
slithering its way through the sand.

Don’t try to find love
By leaning on the cane of the intellect;
that cane is nothing
but a blind man’s stick.
One sign from you is all I want;
One “yes” from you
and my soul will be free.

I am not from this place.
I am a stranger here,
Walking blindly,
Hoping you will come and show me
where to take my next step.

Don’t take the cup away from me
before I’ve had enough to drink
Your promises are charming
but I am not a fool.
Be more giving or I will have to rob you,
you raise your price to discourage me
but I am not naive and won’t give up so easily.
Come out of hiding, open the door and let me in
I am at your mercy, the slave of your smile.
I put on airs to impress you,
even your scolding inflames my passion.
You are the music within music that stole my heart.
If I see beauty it’s because I look through your eyes
but when I come back to myself
I find no one there.
Still you are not content, what more do you want?
My king, I am your falcon and when I hear your drum
I will spread my wings.
If you offer me your love I’ll be drunk with joy,
but if you do not, I will accept,
lower my head and surrender.

When you say, “I’m ignorant: teach me,
such honesty is better than a false reputation.

he said, “O our Lord” and “We have done wrong.
He made no excuses, nor did he invent lies,
nor did he lift up the banner of evasion.

I’ve travelled around
raced through every city
while I knew all along
no place could be found
like the city of love

If I could have known
to value what I owned
I would not have suffered
like a fool
the life of a vagabond

I’ve heard many tunes
all over the globe
all empty
as a kettledrum
except the music of love

it was the sound of
that hollow drum
that made me fall
from the heavens
to this mortal life

i used to soar
among souls
like a heart’s flight
winglessly roaming and
celestially happy

i used to drink
like a flower that drinks
without lips or throat
of the wine that overflows
with laughter and joy

Suddenly
I was summoned by love
to prepare for a journey
to the temple of
suffering

I cried desperately
I begged and pleaded
and shredded my clothes
not to be sent
to this world

Just the way I fear now
going away
to the other world
I was frightened then
to make my descent

Love asked me to go
with no fear to be alone
promising to be close
everywhere I go
closer than my veins

Love threw its spell
its magic and allure
using coyness and charm
I was totally sold and
bought everything with joy

Who am I to resist
love’s many tricks
and not to fall
while the whole world
takes love’s bait

Love showed me
a path but then
lost me on the way
if I could have resisted
I would have found my way

I can show you my friend
surely how you can get there
but here and now
my pen has broken down
before telling you how.

I swear, since seeing Your face,
the whole world is a fraud and fantasy.
The garden is bewildered as to what is leaf

can’t distinguish the birdseed from the snare.

A house of love with no limits,
a presence more beautiful than venus or the moon,
a beauty whose image fills the mirror of the heart.

We wake up empty and scared.

There are hundreds of way to kneel
And kiss the earth.

There is an unseen sweetness
in the stomach’s emptiness.

We are lutes.
When the sound box is filled,
no music can come forth.

When the brain and the belly
are burning from fasting,
every moment a new song rises
out of the fire.

The mists clear,
and a new vitality makes you
spring up the steps before you.

Be empty and cry as a reed instrument.
Be empty and write secrets with a reed pen.

When satiated by food and drink,
an unsightly metal statue
is seated where your spirit should be.

When fasting, good habits gather like
helpful friends.

Fasting is Solomon’s ring.
Don’t give in to illusion
and lose your power.

But even when all will and control
have been lost,
they will return when you fast,
like soldiers appearing out of the ground,
or pennants flying in the breeze.

A table descends to your tents,
the Lord’s table.
Anticipate seeing it when fasting,
this table spread with a different food,
far better than the broth of cabbages.

But once we get drunk on that love,

Though your life has almost passed,
this present moment is its root:
if it lacks moisture, water it with repentance.

Give the Living Water to the root of your life,
so that the tree of your life may flourish.

By this Water,
past mistakes are redeemed.

By this Water,
last year’s poison is made sweet.

When you have eaten too much honey,
it causes you a fever, not someone else;
your day’s wages aren’t given to someone else at day’s end.
What work have you done
without its returning to you in some form?
What seed have you sown
without the produce coming back to you?
Your own action born of your soul and body
clings to your skirt, like your own child.
In the unseen world that action
takes a form corresponding to its nature.
